(Actually we’re so Cool, we’re frozen)
Last month all the CHSS Co-op students had the opportunity to chill out at Iceculture Inc. in Hensall for the afternoon to explore local entrepreneurship in action. Today, Iceculture is the largest organization of its kind in the world. With a staff of 50 employees, the plant produces 25,000 blocks of ice a year which are shipped all over the world. We were split into three groups for an awesome guided tour of their facilities which included a live ice sculpting display which left some students brushing flying ice off their coats. We had to wear parkas in order to enter their huge Ice Lounge display which stays permanently frozen at minus nine degrees all year round. This is the first permanent indoor exhibition of ice sculpture in Canada.
Our Co-op students also had lots of opportunities to ask questions and we were able to see a slideshow which pictured many of their amazing projects that Iceculture has made over the years. One of their biggest achievements includes making the world's largest Ice Maze for General Motors at the Canadian International Auto Show in 2005. This project used 2000 blocks of ice and even put Iceculture into the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest Ice Maze ever made. Iceculture also works closely with NASA to produce ice projectiles which are used in ballistic tests for the shuttle return-to-flight program which is still on-going.
Students saw many of the unique tools that they use to carve, chip, and sculpt the ice with, including CNC machines, lathes and many different power tools including chainsaws. From small ice bowls to large ice lounges the size of your living room, Iceculture makes it all. As they told us on the tour, their business is just a story about a hobby gone mad. What hobbies will our Co-op students turn into successful businesses in the future? Only time will tell.
