For as long as I can remember, I’ve always had an idea regarding what I wanted to pursue in life. For most individuals, this idea is quite dynamic; changing from one interest to the next and disappearing as soon as something new and shiny comes along, but this was never the case for me. I’ve always loved technology and how devices like computers or cell phones operate, so when I was given the opportunity to take this this passion into the field, I jumped in head first.
Now, the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority may not be the first place you would think to see a student who bases their interests and their skills around technology, but there is a lot of work being done in the background there that many individuals don’t realize is being accomplished. For instance, the I.T. department along with a few other staff members are responsible for flood plain mapping throughout our entire watershed. We make use of advanced GIS modeling software, along with information taken directly from the field, to determine high risk areas during a flood event. This type of work is one of the biggest reasons why I love co-oping there. I’m not simply designing a website, or working with numbers in databases, but doing real work with technology that could, if the time ever comes, save communities hundreds of thousands of dollars and even lives. On top of flood plain mapping, I also work in other GIS-related fields, create high quality images in photoshop, build dynamic 3D models and even do some programming if the situation calls for it.
I’m confident that all of the skills I’ve learned, along with the tools I’ve used will play a large role in my future as it has opened up a completely new world of job opportunities. Overall, the MVCA has been quite accommodating and understanding when it came to taking the courses I had finished in high school (along with my personal interests and goals) and tying them into actual tasks that will make a real difference someday. If I had to sum up my experience with the Maitland Valley thus far in one sentence, I would say that if you love working around great people, in a field that is always changing, all the while making an actual difference in the world. Drop by the Maitland Valley because it is a learning opportunity unlike any other.

My name is Mike Park and I am a Co-op student from CHSS at the Huron County Health Unit. I am currently unsure of what Health care career I want to pursue for my future; however, I have hopes that my Co-op placement will shed some light on it. I am not at the Health Unit for the whole semester; at the “half way point” of the semester (November 21) I will be switching from the Health Unit to the Clinton Hospital for the rest of the semester. I hope that this variety of health fields I experience through Co-op will allow me to decide what Health care field I want to pursue.
At the Huron County Health Unit I am a part of the Community Health Team working as a Co-op Health Promoter with my supervisor and friend Angela Ritchie. From my experience at the Health Unit, I have learned about health promotion, have had many positive experiences and met lots of great and funny new people. Through the Health Unit I got to experience a Youth Summit where teens from nine different Health Units came together to talk about the dangers of tobacco, the tobacco company and what we can do to make a difference in our communities and schools. From the Summit we all took back ideas and plans of action we are going to take to help our communities and schools. The Health Unit makes a positive difference in peoples' lives; however, achieving this is not a quick process, but once you do make this positive difference, all the work you put forward to get there seems worth it.
My co-op placement is at the Huron County Health Unit in Clinton. I work five days a week typically 9 til 4:30. I enjoy my placement a lot, I work with lots of nice people who are always there to help. My boss is Angela Ritchie, and she helps me with my tasks that others may want me to work on for them. I have learned a great deal about health promotion and working with my community. I have had a great experience with working with other youth and with other people who work at the Health Unit. We have worked a lot with tobacco and smokers; I feel as if I am making a great difference in my community by handing out information to inform smokers of the risk they are putting their health at. I have made a lot of great connections at my placement with people who work in different aspects of the Health Unit. I am in the community health team, where we promote a lot of great events and activities to the community to get them involved. Some of the different aspects of the Health Unit that we have worked with so far is tobacco, youth binge drinking, and healthy foods.
