Photo caption: CHSS goalie Justine Reid lays it all on the ice to deny Eagles’ forward Kassidy Eckert a second-period goal.
In nail-biting fashion, CHSS forward Shannon O’Reilly slid up the left wing with one minute to go in the third and lifted one past St. Anne’s goalie Steph Sluys to give the Phoenix girls’ hockey team its first win of the season last week. The Eagles and Phoenix squared off in their first cross-town match last Thursday afternoon at the Central Huron Community Complex. The Phoenix narrowly won 4-3.
Jeff Cowan’s and Katrina Klemp’s Phoenix led most of the way and took a 3-1 edge into the third period. The Eagles’ Lexi Smith carried the comeback for St. Anne’s with two of her three overall goals scored midway through the third. Then came O’Reilly’s clincher.
“Oh, it was a good win for us, especially against St. Anne’s,” said Klemp, who co-coaches with Cowan. “A lot of the girls know each other, so it’s always fun to play them.”
Phoenix goals were scored by O’Reilly, Leanne Plunkett, and Heather Heard netted a pair. The team came into the game 0-3, having recently lost to the dominant Stratford Northwestern and St. Mike’s teams. But, in playing against the more evenly matched Eagles, Klemp said last Thursday’s game was the first of the season that she saw the girls executing more plays, reading the ice better and trusting each other would be in their positions. Their weekly practices are starting to pay off, she said.
Even Ryan Clancy, who coaches for St. Anne’s, gave credit to O’Reilly’s smooth shot. “We had a great comeback, but that was a great goal that won it,” he said after the game.
Last week’s loss puts his squad at an 0-2 record on the season so far, with two equally tough matches against Stratford teams coming this week. Clancy said he thought his players moved the puck well against CHSS to get many scoring chances against Phoenix goalie Justine Reid. In practice each Tuesday morning, Clancy has been working specifically on puck control, communication, and strong defense that aims to limit the opposing teams’ chances to score.
Clancy and Cowan are hoping their respective teams play competitively in each game this year.
“I see it as a building year,” said Cowan, adding that his team is mostly made up of students in Grade 11, but has representation from each grade level. “We’re just out to have a lot of fun, work on some new set plays to try and get everyone on the same page.”
As players on both teams also play for different community teams, such as Blyth, Goderich, and Stratford, bringing everyone together into one cohesive unit will be one of the biggest challenges, Cowan said.
The Phoenix’s O’Reilly also plays for the Greater Toronto area Intermediate AA Bluewater Jr. Hawks; forward Nicole Marriage is on the Stratford Aces Midget AA team; and the Eagles’ Steph Sluys and Lexi Smith both play AA hockey for the Saugeen Maitland Lightning. Both teams are back in action tomorrow (Dec. 8) with St. Anne’s hosting Stratford Northwestern in Clinton while CHSS is on the road against Listowel.

This year's student / staff hockey game buyout proved to be a fantastic success once again, raising over $1,300 for the Huron County Christmas Bureau. In a well fought battle involving a couple of teachers falling by the wayside with injuries, the staff proved victorious with a narrow 2-1 victory.

Recently, the CHSS Junior Boys volleyball team hosted another Elementary School Invitational tournament in our large gym, this time it was the boys from Blyth and Clinton Public Schools that came for a friendly round robin tournament. Nine games, three teams, countless serves, sets, digs, spikes, prizes and two and-a-half hours later the 2011 Invitational was over for another year. Although no one beat the CHSS Juniors, some of the elementary players proved that they are already ready for the next level, and we hope they will try out for the CHSS team next September when they come to Central Huron to start grade 9.
Once again the 2011 Junior Boys Volleyball team would like to thank Mr. Kuiper, Lexi Cook, Elanna Wicks, and Kelsey Cameron for taking all the pictures and the student’s council for supplying some prizes. Mr. Taylor would like to thank the Junior Boys Volleyball team for being referees, scorekeepers, linesmen and positive ambassadors for CHSS. We are proud of them all!

Recently, the CHSS Junior Boys volleyball team hosted their annual Elementary School Invitational tournament in our large gym with two of our feeder schools, Huron Centennial and Seaforth Public School. This fun round robin tournament is part of our school’s plan to help local grade 6, 7, and 8 students make the transition from elementary to secondary school. Hopefully, this event will help them prepare for the jump to CHSS that they will have to make in the next few years, for some as early as next September.
This year’s CHSS Junior Boys Volleyball team has 12 players that used to play for Seaforth and Huron Centennial, so they were excited to play against their old schools. Throughout the morning we saw lots of good digs, sets, spikes, and serves as the teams battled it out on the volleyball court. Although no one beat the CHSS team, there were lots of great plays made by the young lads from Seaforth and Huron Centennial that prove that some of them will be ready to try out for next year’s CHSS team.
We would like to thank Mr. Kuiper, Lexi Cook, Elanna Wicks, and Kelsey Cameron for taking all the pictures, the student’s council for supplying some prizes, and the Junior Boys Volleyball team for being referees, scorekeepers, linesmen and positive ambassadors for CHSS. We are proud of them all!

The Junior Boys Volleyball team recently played St. Anne's and Exeter in league play. The 3 games against St. Anne's Catholic all ended in 25 – 23 scores. CHSS won one of them, but we could easily have won all three games. The team also lost a game to Exeter 29 – 27. The team has 6 wins this year and they have also lost 5 games by two points. The boys host Goderich and St. Mike's in matches at CHSS this Thursday October 27th. Hopefully, these dreaded two point losses will turn into more CHSS wins.
