Out-of-Season Coffeehouse

CHSS's first Coffee House of the year was presented on Wednesday, November 4. The theme was 'The Out-of-Season Coffee House', as seen in the variety of 'holiday' decorations. Eric Armstrong very capably hosted the event and introduced a program of artists performing both original and more familiar songs. All in attendance enjoyed performances of solo vocals, vocals with instrumentation, and small band ensembles.

The school's Global Village Club hosted the event and will give the proceeds to Habitat for Humanity as well as local animal shelters. Thanks to the Club's amazing members who baked and donated a delectable selection of tasty treats. Special thanks to those who volunteered with set-up and clean up; it is very much appreciated. Thanks also to Cathy for the cafeteria space, Mr. Kuiper for website coverage (and clean up! ;-)  ), Emily Hildebrand for the coffee maker, and our CHSS custodians.

No Boundaries

On October 22, Amber Walton, Melissa Disher, Matt Austin, Eric Armstrong, Josh Behnish, Mrs. Vercruyssen, and Rob Tarnawski attended the second annual documentary and digital media festival at Stratford Central Secondary School. Participating students had the opportunity to join film teams consisting of other high school and Fanshawe College students. They spent the day learning the basics of the Documentary Film technique. Groups started with an ice breaker, then moved onto brainstorming ideas, storyboarding, filming and finally editing.

Fanshawe Film and Audio students assisted throughout the entire process. In the end all teams showcased their final product. Students were encouraged by William Shatner who was there demonstrating his support for the Festival. A fantastic time was had by all that participated.

New York, New York!!

Our drama, music, and visual arts students had the luxury and pleasure of visiting the Art Capital of the World for a full schedule of activities, tours, and evening shows. Hair, the musical, and the dramatic Wicked were favourites. We also took part in a wild show called Fuerzabruta which had loud techno music and spectacular effects with water and dancers in a moving glass ceiling. Blueman Group was a multi-media performance using a lot of percussion and also involving the audience.

Our tours of the city, architecture, museums, and the famous Museum of Modern Art were incredibly educational, exposing layers of perspectives and  styles. We became familiar with the big city, learning how to use maps and the subway. It was fun to see famous people and places usually seen only on TV and in the movies.

Our students were wonderfully behaved, always on time and a pleasure to take traveling. We hope to offer a similar trip next fall to give our next generation a taste of the arts and life in America's proud multi-cultural city.

Halloween Dance

Weirdness abounded once more at CHSS in the form of the Halloween Dance. Over 200 students, many in costume, turned out for an evening of fun.

Pillowcases for Charity

CHSS fashion classes have just finished sewing bright cheery pillowcases for a charity group that helps children feel special while battling life challenging illnesses. ConKerr cancer has established 83 chapters serving children in 96 hospitals and pediatric hospices across the United States, Canada and South Africa. In just over two years, ConKerr Cancer has delivered over 75,000 cheerful pillowcases to sick children. For more information on how to help make pillowcases or make a donation visit ConKerr.

The World Comes to CHSS!

CHSS is fortunate right now to be the host for seven exchange students. They will each be featured on the blog over the next few weeks.

Today's focus is on Marina Aristando. She is 15 years old and from Spain, and she is staying with Emily Hildebrand. She had always wanted to come to Canada, and her first impressions were positive.

Marina finds the people to be very nice and the food to be not much different. She says that school here is easier than in Spain, and she likes that students can choose their subjects.

Marina loves her host family and Canada and really wishes she could live here for more than three months!

Movie night doors open at 6:00, movies start at 6:30.

Bring a comfy chair or blankets and pillows.

Popcorn and pop available at low cost.

Huron-Perth Cross Country

Huron-Perth was held at the Morrison Dam trail, Exeter on October 22. The weather was true cross country weather, a little cold and damp. The weather did not hinder the performance of the CHSS runners. The midget girls set a high standard for the rest of the team with Jordann Murray running to a silver medal in the Midget girls race. Her teammates Leandra Keller, Melissa Glanville, and Kelsey King all finished strongly, finishing second in the team results.

Junior girl runners, Meagan Cardno and Lexi Cook both had great races, Lexi finishing in 16th and Megan 29th. Our lone senior girls runner, Nicole McIntosh, finished in 13th place, advancing to WOSSAA in a very tough field.

Midget boy runners were struck with the flu; however, two runners were still able to participate. William and Blake both finished in the top of the Midget boys division. Our Junior boys team will also be heading to WOSSAA with a strong team. Curtis Taylor led the leam with a 5th place finish. Jaden Goetz, Jacob McDougall, Paul Doig, Jeremy Crocker, and Nathanal Trumble make up the members of the team.

Finally the Senior boys division over the last couple years have narrowly missed that 3rd place team position; however, this year they were successful, led by the "android" Michael Park in 8th place. Adam Cronin, Matt Chalmers, and David Bolton finished out the team results. 

Again, all results are posted at londonrunner. 

Congratulations to all runners.  WOSSAA will be held on October 29 at Springwater Conservation Area. The bus will be leaving at 7:30 am.
